Ethereum es la tecnología de gestión comunitaria que impulsa la criptomoneda ether (ETH) y miles de aplicaciones descentralizadas.
Esta frase extraída de la propia web de Ethererum, definiría a grandes rasgos, de que se trata esta red Blockchain tan escuchada este último tiempo, siendo la segunda cripto más importante después de Bitcoin.
Ethereum nos permite programar Contratos Inteligentes, desarrollar aplicaciones descentralizadas y emitir nuevos criptoactivos, conocidos como Tokens. Este último tema ha estado muy de moda, por ejemplo uno de los tokens no fungibles son los NFTs, que tanto han dado de que hablar.

Los mineros validan las transacciones en la cadena de bloques de Ethereum . Los mineros agrupan las transacciones en bloques ordenados y los agregan a la cadena de bloques de Ethereum. Los nuevos bloques se transmiten a todos los demás operadores de nodos que ejecutan las transacciones de forma independiente y verifican que sean válidas. Cualquier deshonestidad aparece como una inconsistencia entre diferentes nodos. Los bloques honestos se agregan a la cadena de bloques y se convierten en una parte inmutable de la historia.
La capacidad de cualquier minero para agregar nuevos bloques solo funciona si hay un costo asociado con la minería y la imprevisibilidad sobre qué nodo específico envía el siguiente bloque. Estas condiciones se cumplen mediante la imposición de prueba de trabajo (PoW). Para ser elegible para enviar un bloque de transacciones, un minero debe resolver un rompecabezas computacional arbitrario más rápido que cualquier otro minero.
Un tema importante en este punto es conocer el termino «Pool de minería», ya que para resolver un bloque en la red de Ethereum se requiere mucho poder computacional, si lo intentamos hacer solos, nuestras posibilidades de descubrir un bloque y obtener la recompensa, se reducen mucho, entonces estas agrupaciones de mineros, trabajando en equipo, logran un poder de computo importante y obtienen las recompensas de una forma más constante, la cual se reparte en el grupo de mineros de forma proporcional al poder que están entregando al pool de minería.
Ethereum ha utilizado la prueba de trabajo desde su origen. Migrar de la prueba de trabajo a la prueba de participación siempre ha sido un objetivo fundamental de Ethereum. Sin embargo, desarrollar un sistema de prueba de participación que se adhiera a los principios básicos de seguridad y descentralización de Ethereum no es trivial. Ha requerido mucha investigación y avances en criptografía, criptoeconomía y diseño de mecanismos para llegar a un punto en el que la transición sea posible.

Ya se está construyendo un futuro más verde para Ethereum en forma de una cadena de prueba de participación (PoS) . Bajo la prueba de participación , la resolución arbitraria de acertijos es innecesaria. La eliminación de la resolución de acertijos reduce drásticamente el gasto de energía necesario para proteger la red. Los mineros son reemplazados por validadores que realizan la misma función, excepto que, en lugar de gastar sus activos por adelantado en forma de trabajo computacional, apuestan a ETH como garantía contra el comportamiento deshonesto. Si el validador es perezoso (fuera de línea cuando se supone que debe cumplir con algún deber de validador), su ETH apostado puede filtrarse lentamente, mientras que el comportamiento deshonesto demuestra que los activos apostados se «recortan». Esto incentiva fuertemente la participación activa y honesta en la seguridad de la red.
De manera similar a la prueba de trabajo, una entidad maliciosa requeriría al menos el 51% del ETH total apostado en la red para ejecutar un ataque del 51 % . Sin embargo, a diferencia de la prueba de trabajo, donde la pérdida potencial de un ataque fallido es solo el costo de generar el poder hash necesario para minar, en la prueba de participación, la posible pérdida de un ataque es la cantidad total de ETH utilizado como garantía. Esta estructura de desincentivo permite la seguridad de la red con prueba de participación y elimina la necesidad de gastar energía en cálculos arbitrarios.
